VETERAN HOPE ALLIANCE · OUR PROGRAM VISION
Growing food. Building skills. Finding connection.
We are developing a place where veterans can learn, work alongside others, share knowledge, and build practical food-growing skills in rural Missouri.
WHERE WE ARE TODAY
We are just getting started.
The gardens, animal areas, beehives, orchard, vineyard, habitat, and classes described below are goals for development—not a list of programs currently open to the public. Construction, animal acquisition, instruction, and participant activities will depend on funding, facilities, qualified help, safety planning, and organizational capacity.
We will update this page as individual projects become operational and announce how veterans can participate.
THE IDEA
A working learning environment for veterans.
Our goal is to bring gardening, animal care, pollinators, fruit growing, and food-preservation education together in one practical setting. Participants could learn by doing, spend time outdoors, and connect with other veterans and community members. The aim is not simply to grow food; it is to create opportunities for useful skills, shared purpose, and belonging.
PLANNED PROGRAMS
What we hope to build
Each area below is a development goal. The details and timing may change as plans, resources, and partnerships take shape.
Veteran Raised Gardens
Goal: 30 raised garden beds
We want veterans who are interested in gardening to have a welcoming place to learn soil preparation, planting, watering, seasonal care, harvesting, and working together. The beds could support hands-on lessons for beginners as well as opportunities for experienced gardeners to share what they know.
Livestock & Animal Care
Planned herd and flock: goats, sheep, rabbits, and chickens
Our long-term plan includes supervised opportunities to learn about daily animal care, feeding, shelter, observation, recordkeeping, and responsible stewardship. Animal activities would begin only after appropriate facilities, care plans, staffing, and safety procedures are in place.
- Goats: 8 nannies and 2 billy goats
- Sheep: 9 ewes and 1 ram
- Rabbits: 8 does and 2 bucks
- Rhode Island Red chickens: 40 hens and 5 roosters
Beekeeping & Pollinators
Goal: 10 beehives
We hope to teach interested veterans the fundamentals of beekeeping through appropriately supervised instruction. A future apiary could offer a way to learn about hive care, pollination, seasonal work, equipment, and the relationship between pollinators and food production.
Orchard, Vineyard & Fruit Vines
Goal: Missouri-suited fruit trees and vines
We envision an orchard and vineyard where veterans can learn planting, pruning, trellising, seasonal care, and harvesting. Possible fruit plantings include apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes, and berries. Final varieties will be chosen for the site’s soil, growing conditions, and available care.
Quail Habitat
Goal: a dedicated habitat and learning area
We want to develop a quail habitat as part of the broader outdoor learning environment. The design and educational activities will be determined as the land-use and program plans are developed.
From Harvest to Pantry
Goal: jams, jellies, canning, and food-preservation education
The orchard, vineyard, and gardens could eventually supply hands-on lessons in preparing jams and jellies and preserving seasonal produce. Instruction will use research-tested recipes and appropriate equipment and methods. Any food production beyond educational activities will be evaluated separately before it begins.
HOW IT COMES TOGETHER
Learn it. Grow it. Share the experience.
Build the foundation
Develop safe spaces, garden beds, animal facilities, planting areas, equipment, and the people needed to manage them.
Offer guided learning
Create beginner-friendly, supervised opportunities for veterans to explore gardening, husbandry, beekeeping, fruit growing, and food preservation.
Grow community
Make room for veterans, volunteers, and knowledgeable partners to work together and build lasting connections.
INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING?
Tell us what you would like to learn.
Programs are not open for enrollment yet. If you are a veteran interested in future gardening, animal-care, beekeeping, orchard, or preservation activities, contact us so we can learn about your interests. Sending a request does not guarantee a place in a future program.
HELP BUILD THE VISION
There is a place for community support.
Building these projects will take planning, partnerships, volunteers, materials, ongoing care, and financial support. If this vision matters to you, you can help Veteran Hope Alliance move it forward.
